Origins and development

The cemetery opened in 1876 with an initial layout of straight axes. Its 1912 extension added curved paths and a landscape-park character. Industrial families’ graves and works by sculptor Benno Elkan reflect the city’s history. Burials have again been possible since 1998.

Design and present-day character

The 16-hectare East Cemetery combines historic family graves with park-like paths. More than a hundred graves are listed. Henriette Davidis’s grave is among the documented historic destinations.
